Long-Term Monitoring Program (LTMP)

Continuously monitors the length and breadth of the Great Barrier Reef since 1985, assessing abundance and diversity of algae, coral, fish, crown-of-thorns starfish, coral bleaching, and shark numbers.

Outcomes

Coral trout biomass in GBR no-take zones (2006-2024): 81% greater
Fishery targeted fish species in GBR no-take zones: Nearly twice as many
Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS) outbreaks: Fewer inside GBR no-take zones
Disturbance impacts in GBR no-take zones: 30% lower
Recovery rate in GBR no-take zones: 20% faster
Community composition stability in GBR no-take zones: 21–38% more stable
