Description

Boosting power grid resilience by leveraging distributed energy sources. Power grid emergencies from large disturbances and faults can cause blackouts, making emergency control critical for national power grid. Existing emergency control, which relies on large power plants and bulk loads, is becoming inadequate due to the retirement of coal-fired power plants, driven by growing renewable energy integration. This project aims to develop an innovative emergency control mechanism that engages the large amount of distributed energy sources currently outside the emergency control system, enables decentralised decision-making via edge computing, and operates with bounded latency. The outcome will enhance grid flexibility and resilience, thus improving energy security and supporting the transition to renewable energy.. Scheme: Discovery Projects.
