Description

Cilia biology: an emerging frontier. This project aims to define the molecular mechanisms that govern the protein and lipid composition of a largely ignored cell surface organelle named cilia, found in species from worms to mammals, which is essential for organ development. New knowledge will be generated using a multidisciplinary approach available in few laboratories worldwide, combining high-end imaging of proteins and lipids, proteomics and lipidomics of cilia. Expected outcomes include the first total proteome map of an entire organelle with altered lipid signals. Significant benefits include interdisciplinary training for students and enhanced national/international collaborations that will enable new technology generation, to answer previously unapproachable questions. .
